Aberdeen & Grampian

Prostate services in Grampian are particularly provided for at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. These include radical radiotherapy and external beam radiotherapy, with 2 surgeons performing radical prostatectomy (robot -assisted)  . Patients are referred to the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh for brachytherapy.

There is also a cancer care centre for urological cancers at Ward 44 at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary which is open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm and the first Saturday of every month 2pm -5pm, run in partnership with UCAN.

Argyll & Bute

In Argyll and Bute, there are urology clinics held at The Victoria Hospital in Rothesay and The Victoria Infirmary in Helensburgh. In the case of prostate cancer services, surgery is provided for in Glasgow and radiotherapy and brachytherapy at the Beatson Oncology Centre.

Ayr & Arran

Urology services are provided at Ayr Hospital in a one-stop diagnostic service at the Ballochmyle Suite. There is a specialist nurse led uro-oncology clinic/service for patients with urological/prostate problems after they have had a biopsy. Prostate surgery is undertaken at Ayr Hospital, where there are 2 surgeons performing open radical prostatectomies.  Review clinics are undertaken in Irvine, Cumnock, Girvan and Arran.  Plans for specialist urological cancer treatment at Ayr Hospital have also been agreed. At present, external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy are referred to the Beatson Cancer Centre in Glasgow as part of the Managed Clinical Network in the West. The Continence Care Unit delivers a comprehensive assessment service , as well as delivering conservative treatment and urodynamics.

Borders

There is a joint service between NHS Lothian and Borders providing a range of specialist and sub-specialist urology services, including for prostate problems and prostate cancer, at the Borders General Hospital in Melrose and in Lothian. 2 consultant surgeons were recruited to support this service.

Dumfries & Galloway

Services are provided at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.  The urology staff is made up of two Consultants, one Nurse Consultant and one part-time Specialist Nurse. Specialist andrology and sexual medicine clinics are available, whilst oncology services are provided from Edinburgh. Clinics are held in Dumfries, Stranraer, and seven locations in the area.

There is also a cancer information and support centre at the Royal Infirmary which keeps information on prostate cancer and related subjects including the PSA test, nutrition and relationships. It is open Monday-Friday 10am – 4pm (except bank holidays). Tel: 01387 241979.

Dundee & Tayside

Services in Tayside and Perth and Kinross are provided by a single team that works across 3 sites – Dundee (Ninewells Hospital), Perth Royal Infirmary and Angus Hospitals. There is 1 surgeon undertaking early prostate cancer surgery (laparoscopic radical prostatectomy) and 5 urological surgeons covering advanced prostate cancer, as well as an oncology nurse specialist and a urological radiologist and a clinical oncologist. All of the urological surgeons manage prostatitis and BPH cases along with the urological nursing team.

Trans rectal ultrasound guided prostate biopsy (TRUS) is performed at Ninewells and Perth Royal Infirmary, and for prostate cancer treatment there is external beam radiotherapy based at Ninewells hospital.

Edinburgh & The Lothians

Prostate services in Edinburgh and the Lothians are based at The Western General Hospital in Edinburgh. There is a range of treatments including 2 surgeons performing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy, radical external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy. There is a team of urologists, specialist nurses and oncologists, radiologists providing treatment, and supporting people with prostate issues. There is a specialist male cancer centre, and also a link with services in the Borders as part of a joint agreement.

There is a specialist research project on prostate cancer underway at the HEBA centre at the Western General Hospital. NHS Lothian via the Western General Hospital provide a range of helpful patient leaflets on prostate issues including on the PSA test, biopsies and on minimal access surgery (jointly with Prostate Scotland).

Fife – Dunfermline & Kircaldy

There are two surgeons providing open radical prostatectomy in Fife. Radical external beam and brachytherapy are referred to Western General Hospital Edinburgh. There is also a specialist service for the provision of hormone therapy for men with prostate cancer, run by a specialist nurse based at Queen Margaret Hospital. There is a treatment service for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia utilising a method called Photoselective Vaporisation of the Prostate known commonly as  ‘Greenlight’ laser treatment.

Forth Valley

Urological services (including prostate surgery) are carried out at Forth Valley Royal Infirmary. There are 2 surgeons performing open radical prostatectomy and laser surgery of the prostate is also undertaken utilising the HoLEP system. There is also a specialist nurse clinic for uro-prostate patients. Requirements for external beam radiotherapy are referred to Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Glasgow & Clyde

Urological services for Greater Glasgow and Clyde are carried out at a number of sites. For Greater Glasgow and Clyde patients, both, Robotic Assisted Laparoscopic Prostatectomy using a state of the art Da Vinci Xi System, and Open Prostatectomy are performed at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital by a team of prostate cancer surgeons, including two fellowship trained robotic surgeons.

In addition, there are diagnostic and follow up facilities at Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Victoria Hospital, Gartnavel General and the Vale of Leven Hospital.

Other treatments such as Radiotherapy and Brachytherapy are offered at the Beatson Oncology Centre where there is a specialist cancer care team of urologists, oncologists, nurses and radiographers working on cancers including prostate cancers. the Beatson also serves much of West of Scotland as part of what is called a Managed Clinical Network. Brachytherapy, external beam radiotherapy, intensity modulated radiotherapy and a national cryotherapy service are provided at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.

The team of Urologists and Oncologists work closely together in the decision making and treatment process with two joint Uro-Oncology Clinics every week.

Inverness & Highlands

Raigmore Hospital in Inverness is the main treatment centre in the Highlands for prostate diseases. There are 2 surgeons performing laparascopic radical prostatectomies. The Highlands also offer robot assisted prostate cancer surgery (which is carried out at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary ). There are also four consultants performing trans urethral resection of the prostate at the Raigmore. Transrectal ultrasound and biopsy is also available and this is mainly delivered by a specialist urological nurse service. Radical external beam radiotherapy is also carried out. Brachytherapy is referred to the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh or the Beatson Cancer Centre in Glasgow.

Lanarkshire

Urological services for Lanarkshire are provided at Wishaw General Hospital, Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride and Monklands Hospital in Airdrie. At Wishaw General Hospital there is a specialist uro-oncology service for the Lanarkshire area (inclusive of Wishaw, Hairmyres, and Monklands). Outpatient clinics take place on Mondays 9am-4pm (Outpatient Department) and on Fridays 9am-1pm (Medical Day Unit and Chemotherapy Clinic). The uro-oncology service is supported by two specialist Macmillan Urology Cancer  Nurses Specialists supporting men with prostate cancer. tel: 01698 366084.
