As part of Lothian Buses healthy working lives strategy, the company are offering employees the opportunity to learn more about these two health issues by making information available on the day from advisors and the company doctor.
This work place initiative is part of a national initiative to increase awareness of prostate disease by Prostate Scotland and Lothian Buses are one of an initial 14 employers involved. The Work Place Initiative arises out of the high incidence of prostate disease, which can affect nearly one in two men at some stage in their lives, but is little known about. Alison Walker was seconded to Prostate Scotland from Standard Life for 3 months to develop the Work Place Initiative.
Alan McNeill – Trustee of Prostate Scotland and Consultant Urological Surgeon at the Western General Hospital said:
‘Prostate disease can affect nearly one man in two at some stage of their life and one in twelve men is at risk from prostate cancer – which is now the most common cancer in men in Scotland. Our research, however, shows that too few people across Scotland know about prostate disease and its symptoms’.
‘There is a real need to increase awareness, especially as early diagnosis can often lead to successful treatment and cure. We are pleased to be teaming up with Lothian Buses as part of our Workplace Initiative and would like to thank the Company for its enthusiasm in being one of the Pathfinder companies to sign up for the initiative and also Standard Life plc for kindly seconding a member of their staff to help us develop the initiative’.
