These pages set out your treatment options if you have advanced prostate cancer. If you have locally advanced disease (prostate cancer which has not spread to the bones but has penetrated outside of the capsule of the prostate), you may be offered either:
Hormone treatment/manipulation alone - the use of injections, tablets or a small operation on the testicles to remove or block the action of the male sex hormone on the body
If you have metastatic prostate cancer (disease that has spread outside the prostate gland most commonly to the bones or lymph nodes), you will be offered hormone treatment. In some cases, men with advanced metastatic prostate cancer will also be offered surgery as well as hormone treatment.
There are also some ongoing trials in men with both locally advanced and metastatic prostate cancer and you may be offered the opportunity to participate in one of these.
