Prostate Scotland launches information booklets on Prostate Disease

Prostate Scotland has today launched a series of comprehensive information guides for men and their families about prostate disease and prostate cancer. The 'Explanatory Guides'are the first guides in Scotland to cover the full range of prostate diseases and were been launched to coincide with the holding of the annual British Association of Urological Nurses Conference which took place in Edinburgh.

The 'Explained' series of guides cover information about Prostate Cancer -which is the most common cancer in men in Scotland - as well as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and Prostatitis and their treatments alongside special guides to assist men and their families over important decisions such as PSA tests and treatment choices.

The leaflets and booklets have been developed with input from an Advisory Committee made up of doctors, nurses and patients from across Scotland. The leaflets and booklets have been developed by the Prostate Scotland Information and Advice Project, made possible by funding from the Scottish Government and Sir Tom Farmer through the Farmer Foundation, as well as a donation from the Sportsman's Charity towards the printing of the Early Prostate Cancer guide.

Alan McNeill, Consultant Urological Surgeon at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh and Chair of the Advisory Group that reviewed the leaflets stated: With prostate cancer being the most common cancer in men in Scotland and nearly one in two men over the age of 50 being affected by benign prostatic hyperplasia there is a vital need to ensure that there is up-to-date and accessible information for men in Scotland. Our aim, through these booklets, has been to help answer the many questions that patients and their families across Scotland often have, so that they are better informed when making treatment decisions. We also wanted to ensure that they are written in a style and language that will be accessible and relevant

Mae Bell, Prostate Scotland Information and Advice Coordinator stated:'We developed this information to help ensure that the gap in information that currently exists across the country for men and their families about prostate disease is closed. The booklets are designed to complement the information on the Prostate Scotland website offering men and their families a range of routes for information. We are grateful to the patients, doctors and nurses who helped us develop the information and to our funders the Scottish Government,Sir Tom Farmer and the Sportsman's Charity.
