Prostate Scotland, Scotland’s prostate disease awareness charity has received a prestigious UK award for its impact as an organisation working to create greater awareness of and tackle prostate disease. The GSK IMPACT Award, which has been awarded to Prostate Scotland is run by the respected King’s Fund health institute and sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline. The awards acknowledge the best impact by health charities in the UK for commitment in the field of healthcare and well-being of their communities. The award follows an independent assessment of the charity’s work.
Prostate Scotland is one of only ten charities in the UK to be honored in the 13th Annual GSK IMPACT Awards, which this year attracted over 350 entries, and attended a prestigious ceremony held at the Science Museum in London on Thursday 29th April 2010.
Robert Wilson, Chairman of Prostate Scotland comments: “Prostate disease can affect as many as one man in two in Scotland at some stage in their life and one man in twelve may develop prostate cancer. This award is great news and it is really encouraging to have the impact of the charity independently recognised and will enable us to take our work further. We plan to utilise the funding from the award to help us in our development of awareness of, and provision of, information about prostate disease and prostate cancer in Scotland, as the incidence of prostate cancer is projected to grow by over a third over the coming ten years.”
Sir Cyril Chantler, Chairman, The King’s Fund comments: “Prostate Scotland has developed highly creative and innovative ways of raising awareness of prostate diseases and targets a wide population of men. It has only been operating since 2006 but its reach and the impact it has made in that time is particularly impressive.”
GSK’s Director of UK Corporate Contributions, Katie Pinnock comments: “In a difficult economic climate, demand on charitable organisations is on the increase while income declines. Schemes such as the GSK IMPACT Awards are incredibly important, not only to help provide unrestricted funding but to highlight excellence in community healthcare, and Prostate Scotland is a shining example of how to get it right.”
